Don’t let the “Smarter Balanced” terminology confuse you. This is still about Common Core.
As I noted in this post, two weeks ago, the vote by the Alton Central School (ACS) School Board not to ‘support’ the use of ‘Common Core’ was taken at the September 16, 2013 meeting. So it would have been a year next week.
You would think that they have had plenty of time to come up with a strategy if not a plan.
Wasn’t this covered in the Strategic Plan? I don’t know. I haven’t looked recently.
There are some statements in this article that are beyond the pale. It says that one of the Board Members was ‘NOT CONVINCED’ by the discussion and ‘the discussion’ appears to have hinged on ACS Superintendent, William (‘Bill’) Lander claiming that the State mandates that the test must be conducted. How many shades of gray can you have in that? Shouldn’t the Board have got better clarification of this BY NOW? They have had a year. Does the Board trust the Superintendent on these matters or do they not? Why are they openly questioning his claims? Shouldn’t he have, and I know he is super busy, put together a paper on this that the Board could have studied? He has had 11 months. As far as I know you can produce a baby in 9, so couldn’t these folks have got something sorted out in 11?
Further on it talks about the Chair ‘accusing’ a member of using a ‘crib sheet’ and that the two “went back and forth about this”! What is this. 4th Grade? Amazing.
